In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea and saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 
Matthew 3:1,2

"From that time Jesus began to preach and to say Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 
Matthew 4:17.

That was the message preached to Israel.  God had promised them a kingdom and a king - an earthly kingdom out of heaven and a King descended from David.

However, Israel rejected their King - their Messiah!

The LORD set them aside...

...and a new gospel was announced.

The Apostle Paul was commissioned to make know this new message.
