Psalms
Part I - Introduction

Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
and why art thou disquieted within me?
hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him,
who is the health of my countenance,
and my God.
Psalm 42:11

Authorship of the Psalms

David
David was a warrior of great bravery, a military genius, and a brilliant statesman who led his nation to its pinnacle of power.
Classification of the Psalms
The Psalms have been divided into five books.

Jesus Christ and the Psalms

Jesus was very fond of the Psalms.
He said that many things in the Psalms referred to Him

Messianic Psalms
Called messianic psalms, these psalms written 1000 years before Christ contain statements that are wholly inapplicable to any person in history other than Christ.
Statements in the Psalms that can be only referring to Christ in the New Testament.
These are a few more thoughts that will be covered in the audio sermon from the actual class.

Many say that the Psalms are "Thee Devotional book for the Christians of all time."

  • It is the repository, the castle, the bomb shelter, the supply center, the hospital to heal the wounded & bleeding that have been crushed by the world, the flesh and/or the devil.
  • They are full of doctoral meat!
    • However!!!
      • They must be rightly divided into Paul's teachings!
        • Otherwise, one will be constantly trying to live that righteous holy life or expecting God's chastisement!
        • Words that would confuse a person today if they did not apply rightly dividing:
          • holiness; sacrifices; the Law of the LORD; Mercy; worship; extol; Thy word; presence of the LORD; nigh; blessed are; praise; fear of the LORD / God; righteous; righteousness; voice of the LORD; trust;
      • The direction 'toward' God in these Psalms for us today is for us to be guided directly to the mouth of God - the King James Bible.
        • Otherwise, you will just have another religion trying to live OT manner of life.
        • A few key words that would be 'how' we would do these by turning to the KJB - not just some 'heartfelt' charismatic modern Christian experience thinking it was truly from God.
          • Fortress; refuge; rock; hiding place; help; shield; defence, search(er), strength
  • Psalms will 'come alive' for the people during the Tribulation again - that is, if they have the Psalms available to them! (Amos 8:11-13)
  • "Interesting" verses mentioned in class:
    • 84:10 - For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.  I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
    • Chapter 51 - He does this now for us as we are saved...
    • Chapter 23 - A very popular chapter -
      • ...fortunately it is NOT to be applied TO us at all today!
    • 73:26 - My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
      • in the KJB today - read, study, etc.
    • 71:7 - I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
      • In the KJB!
    • 71:2 - Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
      • He does exactly that today!
    • 33:10 - The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
      • by the KJB - no wonder they hate it so!
    • 85:2 - Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin.  Selah.
      • See Romans 4:7
    • 19:13,14 - Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
      • Paul - sin does NOT have dominion over a Christian today - read Romans 6:14
      • Paul - gives the details of redemption
      • Paul - words of our mouth should be his words - in the KJB
      • Paul - upright? the word is not in Paul's Epistles
      • Paul - strength?  King James Bible!
