What's In It For Us?
Part V

Joshua

Mostly still just an outline - the subject matter will vary as we will include some discussion about how the word of God worketh effectually in them that believe as they read through the Old Testament, too.

Worketh Effectually!
While the Old Testament is not TO us, it certainly is still there FOR us; God will still speak to our hearts as we read through it all!  I Thessalonians 2:13 - For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Ensamples for us!
I Corinthians 10:11,12 - Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Not just knowledge of the stories, but what goes through your mind as you read these stories?

1)  History in minute and truthful detail
2)  War and Peace - never stays the same!
3)  Death / huge numbers / gruesome / gross
4)  Seeing folks today still try to apply the design of a physical kingdom today.  Catholics and now modern bunch - "conquering" and "victory for Jesus" all getting bad press towards God and truth of rightly dividing that Bible!  Anti-christs and false christs, etc. are a dime a dozen these days!

Joshua
Joshua was a personal attendant of Moses - was with Moses in the Mount & was one of the twelve spies.  He was 85 when he succeeded Moses; supposedly ruled for about 25 years & and died at 110.

He was a great warrior, disciplined his forces, sent spies but prayed and trusted God!

Lots of archaeology with this time period!

Stories of:
valour
fear
whining / spoiled
disobedience
rebellion
doubt (had to SEE something and sometimes more than once!)

Interesting words often repeated:
Host
Slew
Thousand (big numbers)
valour
smote
gods
Israel & evil - (n the same sentence)

See Psalm 106:24-43 that summarizes these folks in their days of early Old Testament...
Note:  Nevertheless: verses 44-48; Ezekiel 16:60 (following God's blessings 16:6-14, God's judgment 16:15-59; God's mercy - 16:60-63)
See Romans 2:3 - folks laugh at the stories of the OT - fables, etc. but they show the judgment of God over and over!

Let's hear from you now - what have you been 'ensample-ated' as you have read through Joshua?

Chapter 1 - The Book!
Chapter 2 - the Two Spies and Rahab
Chapter 3 - they cross the Jordan
Chapter 4 - the Memorial Stones
Chapter 5 - They keep the Passover
Chapter 6 - The Fall of Jericho
Chapter 7,8 - Fall of Ai and Bethel
Chapter 8:30-35 - Law Recorded at Mt Ebal
Chapter 9,10 - Battle where the Sun Stood Still
Chapter 11 - Kings of the North Defeated
Chapter 12 - List of Destroyed Kings
Chapters 13-22 - Division of the Land
Chapters 23,24 - Joshua's Farewell Address

P.S.  (From Haley's Handbook)
Religion of the Canaanites
Baal was their principal god; Ashtoreth, Baal's wife, their principal goddess.  She was the personification of the reproductive principle in nature.  Ishtar was her Babylonian name; Astarte her Greek and Roman name.  Ashera was a sacred pole, cone of stone, or a tree trunk, representing the goddess.

The worship of Baal, Ashtoreth and other Canaanite gods consisted in the most extravagant orgies; their temples were centers of vice!

They sacrificed their first-born children to Baal often.  Jars containing remains of babies have been found.
Foundation sacrifices - a child would be built into the wall to bring good luck to the rest of the family!
Lots of 'pornography' has been found under the rubbish in what are called the High Places.

That sounds a lot like today, wouldn't you say!
Yes, we can truly learn from Joshua and his time!
