The trend today is to think 'to rot in prison' is the worst punishment
one can be given. Even if prison was a horrible place without all
the luxuries of life, etc. it certainly isn't the worse thing that will
happen to someone.
Will the Islamic folks be disappointed that there are not 23 virgins
waiting for them? Actually, there will be far more than 23 or whatever
the number they say...
Let's look at what the Scriptures say about God's vengeance. Folks
who think God is not 'into vengeance' have obviously lost their belief
in the Scriptures!
Vengeance: The infliction of pain on another, in return for an
injury or offense.
-
Such infliction, when it proceeds from malice or more resentment, and is
not necessary for the purposes of justice, is revenge, and a most heinous
crime.
-
When such infliction proceeds from a mere love of justice, and the necessity
of punishing offenders for the support of the laws, it is vengeance, and
is warrantable and just.
-
In the case from the Scriptures, vengeance is a just retribution, recompense
or punishment. In this latter sense the word is used in Scripture,
and frequently applied to the punishments inflicted by God on sinners.
Let's look at a few verses that show
the various times of vengeance from God!
Part I
Old Testament!
This is the stuff that our little kids don't seem to
learn about God anymore...
Isaiah 1:24 - Therefore
saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will
ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
Jeremiah 5:9-14 - Shall
I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul
be avenged on such a nation as this? Go ye up upon her walls,
and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they
are not the LORD's. For the house of Israel and the house of Judah
have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. They
have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon
us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: And the prophets
shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto
them. Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this
word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood,
and it shall devour them.
Jeremiah 5:29-31 - Shall
I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be
avenged on such a nation as this? A wonderful and horrible thing
is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the
priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and
what will ye do in the end thereof?
Jeremiah 9:9-11 - Shall
I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul
be avenged on such a nation as this? For the mountains will I take up a
weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation,
because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither
can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and
the beast are fled; they are gone. And I will make Jerusalem heaps,
and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without
an inhabitant.
Jeremiah 46:10 - For
this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may
avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall
be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath
a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
Nahum 1:2-8 - God
is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious;
the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath
for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and
will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind
and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh
the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth,
and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains
quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence,
yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before
his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger?
his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them
that trust in him. But with an overrunning flood he will make an
utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
Ezekiel 25:16,17 - Therefore
thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the
Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant
of the sea coast. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with
furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay
my vengeance upon them.
Micah 5:15 - And
I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they
have not heard. (read
the whole prophecy in that chapter about Jesus!)
From Moses: Deuteronomy
32:35-43 -To
me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time:
for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come
upon them make haste. For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent
himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there
is none shut up, or left. And he shall say, Where are their gods, their
rock in whom they trusted, Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices,
and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and
help you, and be your protection. See now that I, even I, am he,
and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal:
neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my
hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. If I whet my glittering
sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to
mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine
arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with
the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges
upon the enemy. Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for
he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to
his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.
From the people:
Psalm 149:7-9 - To
execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To
bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints.
Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 58:9-11 - Before
your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind,
both living, and in his wrath. The righteous shall rejoice when he
seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily
he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous

Conclusion
Rejected by God who moves on to Gentiles!
-
Romans 10:19 - But
I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy
by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
-
Romans 11:8-10 - (According
as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that
they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock,
and a recompence unto them: Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not
see, and bow down their back alway.
-
Romans 11:11 - I
say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather
through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke
them to jealousy.
-
Romans 11:20 - Well;
because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be
not highminded, but fear:
-

as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy
through their unbelief:

We have no vengeance or 'pay-backs' coming from God! Jesus paid it

However, our works still have to go through the fires of judgment!
-
We still can reap what we sow - and even according to Scriptures
- Galatians 6:7,8
-
Be
not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall
he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh
reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap
life everlasting.

Conclusion
Isaiah 66:14-18 - And
when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish
like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants,
and his indignation toward his enemies. For, behold, the LORD will
come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger
with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by
his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD
shall be many. They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves
in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and
the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.
For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather
all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.
The importance of rightly dividing is to know what
judgment and wrath is for which time. Although, You may ask, "Does it
really matter - the end is the same?" Well, yes - we must preach
the truth - but yes, the final result is the same - eternal fire - everlasting
destruction!
Nobody is annihilated or blinked to nothing - or reincarnated, etc.
If so, there would be no terror of the Lord. That is just teaching
that tries to deceive folks by taking the word
out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. Luke
8:12
Knowing
therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men;
but we are made manifest
unto God;
and I trust also are made
manifest in your consciences.
