Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth - the Key to Biblical Understanding
2005 - Touchet Baptist Church, Touchet, Washington - Pastor Mike Paulson - 2005
Learning the way of God more perfectly - Acts 18:

Astonished at Your Own Biblical Understanding?
How is your own understanding coming along?

I am thrilled with mine!
(And the Lord gets all the glory!)

And I am not bragging - just realizing my own confidence and knowing it is based on rightly dividing the word of truth!:
Proverbs 3:26  For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
Proverbs 14:26  In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

Are you astonished at your understanding of rightly divided doctrine?  I am at mine... - Matthew 7:28; 22:33; Mark 11:18; Luke 4:32
Are you astonished out of measure?  I am at mine... -  Mark 10:26
Are you astonished at the authority of your understanding?   I am at mine... -  Mark 1:22
Are you astonished at your understanding and answers?  I am at mine... -  Luke 2:47
Are you astonished at what your understanding has brought into your life? I am at mine ... -  Luke 5:9
Are you astonished at what the Holy Spirit has shown you in your reading, your life and in your personal relationship with Christ Himself? I am at mine... -  Acts 10:45

Are others astonished at your understanding?  Well, I dunno - it just seems to make others mad, I guess... they don't seem to WANT to believe me nor are they thrilled in any understanding I try to pass on -  Acts 12:16;  My friends usually become gainsayers; they treat me like I have suddenly become their enemy; how about you?  Galatians 4:16; II Corinthians 12:15  And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.

You may just have to part with them for a bit...  they will get it if you pray, don't fall back and just show them Paul's gospel walk of grace and truth!
II Thessalonians 3:13-16 has some good encouraging direction and advice for us as we continue our journey down this road of rightly dividing.  But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.  Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.  Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
II Timothy 2:15,16

Wrongly dividing leads to more ungodliness, no matter what you think ...  these are Laodicean days. The smell of pious holiness and American Calvinistic bondage comes from wrongly dividing!   Read that stuff carefully and make sure you are not more of 3:17 - or are you in understanding of the necessity of verse 18!   Wrongly dividing has destroyed this country!  (another sermon some time!)

Revelation 3:17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
Revelation 3:18: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

I will brag on the Lord, seeing as He is the one who gives us His understanding, amen?  Amen!  He has given me so much understanding - I hope I have passed some of it on to others - you especially. II Timothy 2:1,2  Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.  Jeremiah 3:15  And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Old Testament -

John and his ministry of baptism! Jesus Life and the Gospels! Acts and all that transpires in it's transitional stages! Paul and "his gospel!" Tribulation and Millennium & beyond... And now Peter...
Understanding truly comes from God to Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit
within that King James Bible!
(thus the importance of that Bible being the Holy Bible,
not some perverted corruption full of the spirit of antichrist)

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
Luke 24:45

Psalm 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Psalm 119:169  Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.

Proverbs 2:6  For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 4:5  Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Proverbs 9:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 15:32  He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

II Thessalonians 2:13  For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Hebrews 4:12,13  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Even Paul was concerned about our growth in understanding.
II Timothy 2:7  Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
I Corinthians 14:20   Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Ephesians 1:18  ... The eyes of your understanding being enlightened ...
Colossians 1:9,10a+  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;  10: That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing,
II Thessalonians 3:1-3  Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:  And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.  But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

Understanding only comes after one is saved as that is the first stage of learning...
...actually learning the things of God - see I Corinthians 2:9-16

It's still all about the Book - and always will be.
Put that Holy Book into your kids brain - and some day God will move it to their heart!

Keeps us!

Makes us happy!

Gives us strength!

Helps us seek good ground!

Keeps us from more ungodliness!
II Timothy 2:15,16  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Helps us die well!

Ephesians 1:12-14  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

IF...
My son, if thou wilt receive my words,
and hide my commandments (rightly divided...) with thee;

So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom,
and apply thine heart to understanding;

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge,
and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

If thou seekest her as silver,
and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD,
and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:1-5

Forsake the foolish,
and live;
and go in the way of understanding.
