The Prairie

The wide open prairie, peacefully calm even when the wind is blowing from 0 to 80 mph!
It can be 115 degrees or -35 with a wind chill of -90.
Whether it be 100 grasshoppers per sq. foot or a rattlesnake den...
Whether it be snow drifts over your house or hail ripping apart your roof...
It is still a marvelous place.

I would like to recommend two very 'good' and quick read & picture books for those interested...

An Original Sod House Prairie Homestead

The Prairie Homestead is the original home of Mr. and Mrs Ed Brown who homesteaded 160 acres in 1909.  This original homestead is preserved as though a homestead family was living there today.  This homestead is typical of the homes they built or rather dug into the ground.  See www.prairiehomestead.com for details of this homestead family in the early 1900's on the prairie.

Pictures of the days it was 'in action.'

Behind the house.

Their outhouse - and that would have been a cold walk during the winter blizzards!

no comment...  haha  There is history in those holes!

The 5 acres they needed to plow up so they could keep the claim.

Their food storage hole.

Their chicken hut.

One of their original wagons.

30 feet deep 'hand dug' well.  Water was tough to find let alone get at by digging.

Peaple did actually live there!

The White Prairie Dog
The Prairie Homestead has the only white prairie dog town in the world.
Now don't say, "awe, so cute!"  They are a rodent - they destroy farmland - they need to be in my crosshairs of my .17 Golden Boy, not in the lens of my camera.  You ask me how I can shoot these critters and I ask you how can you not?
