Pictures and Short Video Clips of Our Life in Western South Dakota

The Black Hills

Lake Pactola High Water
A short clip of Pactola Lake, July, 2011 that shows the high water level.  It wasn't just a few years ago that the lake was VERY low in water.

Wildlife Loop / Custer State Park / Iron Mountain Road

These are short video clips of our recent trip through the Black Hills – specifically Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Road, where we were caught in the middle of a huge herd of Buffalo. As you will see, they seemed to be very satisfied with themselves as they strolled along the road, walking amongst the cars.  Of course nobody was in a hurry to leave – we didn't want to spook the critters – they looked like they could knock off a car pretty well!  I must say it was still an eerie feeling to be that close to 'non-zooed' buffalos wild in the country knowing that if they got irritated, they could do some serious damage!

(ps – these are very short clips)
Buffalo up-close.  Very close, as a matter of fact...

Peaceful countryside.  Stop and take a little walk and enjoy real peace and quiet!

Pig Tail bridges - loopity loop bridges

Wrong season - grrr

Iron7215.wmv - this is a scan view from the top of Iron Mountain highway.
This is very pleasant and enjoyable drive - full of tunnels, wildlife and great views.

Mount Rushmore

Below is an early pic Mt Rushmore from my own scrapbook - circa 1950's.
Today's view is the third viewing angle & remodel that I know of.
The back road to Hill City used to be a separated two single path dirt road
weaving each lane separately through the forest - now that was a fun drive!

more coming...

Sylvan Lake

Feed the Mules from inside your car!
These critters have held this tradition since I can remember as a kid in the 1950's!

There is a section on the wildlife loop trail where ‘wild’ mules hang around the highway for tourists to feed them.  As you can see, they are not intimidated by tourists or their car windows, either!  I remember them being on the Iron Mountain Road but it seems they have moved to the wildlife loop.

Tunnels
There are a number of tunnels as you travel through the hills; most of them are on Iron Mountain Road.  When you come through a few of them, you will see the four famous presidents watching you exit the tunnel.

Tunnels on Needles Highway at the Needles.

Watch a bus go through this one with hardly an inch to spare on either side!
That is a skilled accomplishment for the drivers!
Click here for pics of bus through tunnel.
(takes you to a separate site - these are not my bus pictures - I hope to get my own pics soon)

Dinosaur Park
This park has been around for a long time - I played on these same creatures when I was a little guy!

On the right, I am the skinny leg guy - late 1950's.
On the left, I am the smaller of the two creatures - 2010 - 60 years old.

... There will be more pics and videos coming as we drive off on our little get-away jaunts! ...
Of course there are many better pictures on the internet about Western South Dakota;
this site will just be pictures of our own as we look around the countryside ourselves.
