Paul's Second Charge to Timothy
I Timothy 2:1-8
This is a charge to continue in prayer
and teach your church (as a pastor) and your family (as a father) to pray.
Also some good instruction from the man who has led someone to the Lord as
those new Christians need to learn about prayer as your own children.
1

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
Supplication:  ""Entreaty; humble and earnest prayer in worship. Petition; earnest request.  Supplications are prayers of something that you or someone else needs.
Intercession:   "The act of interceding; mediation; interposition between parties at variance, with a view to reconciliation; prayer or solicitation to one party in favor of another, sometimes against another."  You can pray for someone who is unable to get the prayer answered, or who doesn't see the need of prayer.
Giving thanks:  Not being thankful starts a long and dangerous process - Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,  Romans 1:21,22

We have plenty to be thankful about!  It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.  Lamentations 3:22,23

The important comment here is for ALL men!  Lost or saved, whether or not we know them!

And the simple statement "first of all" makes this the most important part of our ministry.  Prayer for all men - prayer for all of our children, as we make personal application her for our family, too.  We can pray for others, as well!  That is how we can help those who we are not allowed to help!

Supplications + prayers + intercessions + giving of thanks - for ALL men!
It is that simple - just do it!
Make the time and take the time!

2
For kings, and for all that are in authority;
that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
We pray for us by praying for them!
Not to save society - not to bring peace on earth - not to end nuclear threat - not to guarantee civil justice for oppressed minorities - not to save our environment, etc.  It is so the Christian can live in peace and practice godliness in an honest fashion.  (I Timothy 6:3)

Jesus didn't pray for the world, why should we?  John 17:9 - praying for salvation and for their blindness to be removed is fine, but for their daily worldly living?  Nope!  II Timothy 2:26: And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Two Reasons for this prayer emphasis!
3
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4
Who will have all men to be saved,
and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Salvation leads you to the Book!  Thy word is truth - the KJV is His word, thus it is truth!  God will lead a newly saved person to a King James Bible - or to a person with one, etc.  Unless of course, he is moved to another gospel, etc.  Galatians 1:6-8  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

For there is one God,
and one mediator between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus;
This is one of the sixteen great anti-Catholic verses in the Bible that comprise 'hate literature' today.  The other fifteen are:  Hebrews 10:8-12 destroys the mass 'celebration'; Matthew 23:9 tells us to call no man father upon the earth; I Corinthians 10:2-4 & Deuteronomy 32:31,32 destroys the idea that Peter is the Rock; Hebrews 1:3 kills the idea of a priest or co-saviour doing any purging of anyone's sins; Matthew 1:25 along with Luke 8:20-21 mentions of the obvious fact of Mary having more children.

Keep in mind, also - that not only is Jesus Christ between us and God, so that we can actually go to the throne of grace (Heb 4:16), but that the wrath of God has been paid from God toward us!

6
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
There is that word "All", again.
7
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle,
(I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;)
a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
Just heed the 'advice' of the preacher speaking the words of Jesus Christ!
Remember them which have the rule over you,
who have spoken unto you the word of God:
whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Hebrews 13:7
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves:
for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account,
that they may do it with joy, and not with grief:
for that is unprofitable for you.
Hebrews 13:17

lifting up holy hands,

This is the Old Testament manner (see I Kings 8:22, 23 and Psalm 88:9).  The position of the dying thief is the position of prayer, as was Moses' position during the battle with the Amalekites (Exodus 17:11-12).  Jeremiah 7:16 and 11:14 show that the original gesture accompanied the 'lifting up' of the prayer itself.  This is sort of the 'warrior' position of prayer.

Then there is the kneeling position.
Psalm 95:6  O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
Daniel

Daniel 6:10  Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
Solomon did both at the same time!
II Chronicles 6:13 For Solomon had made a brasen scaffold, of five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,
A Leper did directly to Jesus
Mark 1:40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
Disciples held Jesus feet
Matthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
Every knee 'should' bow!
Philippians 2:10,11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Every knee 'will' bow!
Isaiah 45:23  I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
Romans 14:11  For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Jesus in the garden
Luke 22:41  And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
Stephen
Acts 7:60  And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
Paul
Acts 20:36  And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
Another man to Jesus
Matthew 17:14   And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
Peter
Luke 5:8  When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Paul did 'to Him' 'for us'!
Ephesians 3:14-19   For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, : Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16: That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18: May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19: And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

The LORD upholdeth all that fall,
and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
Psalm 145:14

without wrath and doubting.
According to the finest twentieth century 'brainless' brains in the country, the word 'doubting' should not be in the verse.  So, in loyal obedience to the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the NAB and the NASV has changed the word to 'dissension' to match Rome; and the NIV leans far enough toward Rome to make it 'disputing.'  The RSV says 'quarreling,' and the LB puts in 'resentment'.

We have here the old case of "He couldn't have used this word because it doesn't line up with the thought that we think he is trying to get across".

This is simple: WRATH was a reference to the petitioner's attitude toward his fellow men, and DOUBTING was his attitude toward the God to whom he was praying.  But the brainless scholars decided that both words had to refer to HUMANISM: the petitioner's attitude towards humans (hence the change).
