We Sing Lies

Introduction - reminders of a few verses that remind us about the dangers that are growing in music today...
One of our greatest opportunities for personal 'hypocrisy' is when we sing our hymns in church / home, etc.

There are phrases, words, doctrines, etc. that are incorrect - modern word / false word / false teachings, etc.

What is so bad about that, you ask?
You actually have to ask?

Here are a few hymns that need to be corrected or eliminated from our 'repertoire' of singing or accepted as admonishment and challenge you to not blindly sing them just because you like the tune or the enjoyment of singing with the church family!.
Hymn Title
Incorrect Word(s)
& admonishment
Comments on the false doctrine as well as...
...Do you ever recognize teaching & admonishment as you sing?

Battle Hymn of the Republic
The theme & teaching of the whole song!

Mine eyes have seen the coming of the Lord

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored

I have seen him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps.

He hath loosed the lightening of his terrible swift sword?

He has sounded the trumpet

Sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat

In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,

Written in 1861. Did Christ come during the War Between the States?

Composer went from strict Episcopalian Calvanist to a radical Unitarian.  The song matches the Transcendental Unitarian Creed.

God's judgment was against the South - the Union was God's revenge. Union army members received God's grace by killing the Confederate soldiers.

Juliet Howe didn't believe in Christ as the Messiah / Saviour, etc. - just another great teacher.  She also didn't believe in Hell and to get to heaven was by one's own works and merit.

The Battle Hymn would be more appropriate to inspire a Moslem to engage in an Islamic Jihad rather than to encourage Christians to take up arms to spread the cause of Christ.
  • 1. Do we believe that the American Civil War was the Second Coming of Christ and the Battle of Armageddon?
  • 2. Do we believe that the evening campfires of the Union soldiers were actual altars to Jesus Christ?
  • 3. Do we believe that the Civil War was the “Day of the Lord” prophesied in Scripture?
  • 4. Do we believe that we receive the grace of God only to the extent that we brandish literal swords against the enemies of God?
  • 5. Do we believe that Gen. 3:15 speaks of the Messiah or of soldiers in the Union Army?
  • 6. Do we believe that answering the call to serve in the Armed Forces will enable us to avoid condemnation at the Judgment Seat of God?
  • 7. Does Christ’s death on the cross inspire us to preach Paul's gospel of the Risen Saviour or to take up literal swords in a holy Jihad and die for the cause of political freedom?
Read Revelation 6:2 - this would be a good song for the coming of the antichrist - he comes to conquer, so most Christians today think we must conquer this world for Jesus, etc.

Read Revelation 19:11 for the coming of the Real Christ!

With this song, is TRUTH MARCHING ON?  NOT AT ALL!

There are plenty more coming...
You can find them too, and send them to me and I will include them into this chart...
There are plenty more coming...
There are plenty more coming...

The entire King James Bible is written FOR us, but it is not all written TO us!
We learn from the "For" and we learn to apply the 'TO!"
