The
Sermon on the Mount Compared to Paul's Epistles
Part
I
Review
introduction - Matthew 5:1-4
Some
of the following notes were also covered in the Sunday School session earlier
and
so may be skipped in this particular sermon - but, the notes are still
there for you!!
The Gospels - the Way of
God to Jews!
-
The Beatitudes within the Sermon on the Mount were
to be the way of happiness for the
Jews as taught to them
by their Messiah!
-
As the Gospels were NOT to the Gentiles, so the Sermon
on the Mount is NOT to the Gentiles. (and ...They STILL are NOT!)
-
Matthew 6:31,32 - Therefore
take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or,
Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the
Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need
of all these things.
-
Matthew 10:5-7 - These
twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the
way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach,
saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
-
Matthew 10:17,18 - But
beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will
scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be brought before governors
and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
-
Matthew 15:24 - But
he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house
of Israel.
-
There was no spiritual circumcision
(Colossians 2:11-16)
-
There was no indwelling Holy Spirit!
-
John 7:39 -
(But
this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive:
for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
-
The only '...tions' concerning
'salvation' were 'remission' and 'confession!'
-
Mark 1:4,5
- John did baptize in the wilderness, and
preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went
out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all
baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
-
Luke 24:47
- And that repentance and remission
of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem.
-
There were no New Testament writings
at this time!
-
Hebrews 9:16,17
- For where a testament is, there must
also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force
after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator
liveth.
-
The disciples that are mentioned in
verse
1 are referring to the multitudes that have followed Him everywhere
at this point (see 4:23-25)!
-
Onward to the Great Commission!
-
Matthew 24:14 - And
this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness
unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Teachings from the Sermon on the Mount - Part
of the Great Commission?
-
Sure!
-
Matthew 28:19,20 -
Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe
all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you
alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
-
Mark - 16:15-20 -And
he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel
to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but
he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow
them that believe; In my name shall
they cast out devils; they
shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents;
and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after
the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat
on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where,
the
Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.
Amen.
-
Acts 1-8 - apostles
doctrine and action!
-
but it was finished - completed!
-
Romans 10:18,19 - But
I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the
earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. But I say,
Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy
by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will
anger you.
-
Acts 7:54-60
However, today, Paul's teachings are to us - rightly
divided 1611 King James Bible - Romans
to
Philemon!
-
Acts 26:16 -
But
rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose,
to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou
hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
-
A more excellent way!
-
I Corinthians 12:31
- ... and yet shew I unto you a more
excellent way.
-
Paul's ways "which be in Christ" taught every
where in every church!
-
I Corinthians 4:17
- For this cause have I sent unto you
Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring
you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach
every where in every church.
-
Way of God more perfectly!
-
Acts 18:26 - ...expounded
unto him the way of God more perfectly.
-
We are built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets and Jesus Christ himself!!
-
Ephesians 2:19-22
- Now therefore ye are no more strangers
and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household
of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple
in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation
of God through the Spirit.
-
Paul - the wise master-builder!
-
I Corinthians 3:10,11 -
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder,
I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every
man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man
lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Do Paul's
'ways of building' include Jesus' Sermon on the Mount?
NO!
His ways are the way of God more perfectly!
Paul's ways have a purpose towards Israel!
-
Romans 11:11 - I
say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather
through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke
them to jealousy.
-
Romans 11:14 -
If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh,
and might save some of them.
Matthew 5
1,2 -And
seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set,
his disciples came unto him: And
he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
-
See the end of this sermon to observe the beginning
and end as well as to whom it was addressed.
3 - Blessed
are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Risen Christ, through Paul on our spirit (small 's'):
-
Small 's' spirit - in the spirit of, man's spirit,
etc.
-
Romans 1:9 - For
God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son,
that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
-
Romans 7:6 - But
now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held;
that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the
letter.
-
Romans 8:15 -
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have
received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
-
Romans 11:8 -
(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber,
eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto
this day.
-
Romans 12:11 -
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
-
I Corinthians 2:11
- For what man knoweth the things of a
man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God
knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
-
I Corinthians 2:12
- Now we have received, not the spirit
of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things
that are freely given to us of God.
-
I Corinthians 6:20
- For ye are bought with a price: therefore
glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
-
Galatians 6:18 -
Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
-
II Timothy 1:7 -
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love,
and of a sound mind.
-
II Timothy 4:22 -
The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
-
Kingdom of heaven?
-
No - according to the Risen Saviour through Paul,
the way of God more perfectly now is about the kingdom of God!
-
Romans 14:17 - For
the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace,
and joy in the Holy Ghost.
-
Acts 19:8 - And
he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months,
disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
-
Acts 28:23 -
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his
lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading
them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets,
from morning till evening.
-
Acts 28:31 -
Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the
Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
-
II Thessalonians 1:5
- Which is a manifest token of the righteous
judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for
which ye also suffer:
4: Blessed
are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
According to the Risen Saviour through Paul,
the way of God more perfectly now shows many ways of being comforted!
-
How were they comforted then?
-
Gospels
-
little comfort, actually - mourn!
-
No Spirit yet!
-
Jesus was leaving
-
No Bible, etc.
-
Apostles needed comforting like everyone else!
-
Great Commission
-
John 14, 16
-
in part?
-
I Corinthians 13:8,9 - Charity
never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether
there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall
vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
-
Today
-
from the King James Bible!
-
I Corinthians 13:10 - But
when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be
done away.
-
Romans 15:4 -
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,
that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
-
II Corinthians 1:4 - Who
comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them
which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted
of God.
-
from the brethren! and from Titus!
-
II Corinthians 7:6,7 - Nevertheless
God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming
of Titus; And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith
he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning,
your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
-
Even after he preached hard to them!
-
II Corinthians 7:8-10 -
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did
repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though
it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but
that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner,
that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh
repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world
worketh death.
-
Tychicus will comfort!
-
Colossians 4:7,8 -
All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother,
and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: Whom I have sent
unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort
your hearts;
-
Assisted in writing Colossians; Ephesians
-
Paul and the gang like a father to them!
-
I Thessalonians 2:7-12 -
But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:
So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted
unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye
were dear unto us. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for
labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of
you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. Ye are witnesses, and God
also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among
you that believe: As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged
every one of you, as a father doth his children, That ye would walk worthy
of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
-
Timothy gave them comfort!
-
I Thessalonians 3:2 -
And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer
in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning
your faith:
-
Not to mourn like the world!
-
I Thessalonians 4:13,14
- But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which
are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For
if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep
in Jesus will God bring with him.
-
I Thessalonians 4:18 -
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

entire King James Bible is written FOR us, but it is not all written TO
us!
We
learn from the "For" and we try to apply the 'TO!"
