Can David and Saul Be
Our Music Example?
I Samuel 16:14-23

Music is a powerful medium to all of us.  Turning to I Samuel 16:14-23, we see a great example of how music affected a person in all three areas of our being...
in a physical manner,
in a mental manner,
in a spiritual manner.

In other words, music will deal with our spirit, our soul, and our body.

In I Samuel 16:23, we see that through the medium of music, David provided Saul blessings to his flesh (he was well); to his soul (Saul was refreshed) and to his spirit (the evil spirit departed from him).

In these days of music being such an important influence, Christians use Saul as the classic example in the Bible to prove that music is good for everyone in all three areas - physically, mentally and spiritually.  Thus we see the supposed reference for the growth of music ministries throughout the church!

Now, keep in mind, that we are sons of God - children of God!:

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God,
without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation,
among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
Philippians 2:15

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26

... and as sons of God, we have something that Saul did not have...

The Holy Spirit!
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul,
and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
 I Samuel 16:14

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly;
and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless
unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I Thessalonians 5:23
So, until God glorifies our body which will enable us to physically live in
the Kingdom of God, for now, we have to be 'satisfied' with God living in us!

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,
which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price:
therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
I Corinthians 6:19,20

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
I Corinthians 3:16

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?
for ye are the temple of the living God;
as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them;
and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
II Corinthians 6:16

So with God living in us, and with Him providing His words to walk us through each and every moment of each and every day, our use of music is very much different than that of the world.  We must have a NEW SONG!
 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
II Corinthians 5:17,18

Simply put, the new purpose and use of music for a Christian is to praise God, and not himself.
Sing unto God, sing praises to his name:
extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH,
and rejoice before him.
Psalm 68:4

We will get all the comfort, direction, encouragement, peace, strength, etc. from God by our reading His inspired and preserved words in the KJV1611 Holy Bible.  The music we do hear and perform must be pleasing to God as the music from us is to be given to Him in praises, not for our 'entertainment', etc.  The music that we hear must not be Spirit quenching and Spirit grieving because the Holy Spirit can not 'leave' us nor forsake us like He did regarding Saul.  Any music for OUR flesh profiteth nothing for us.

Conclusion:  We Can Not Use Saul as Our Example

As a Christian, we CANNOT use Saul as our example
for the use of music to be a 'blessing' to us.
Our music now must be pleasing to God - not to us.

When a person 'dies to self' to 'live for Jesus Christ' by being 'born again', a person's music also must die.  Our music of the world dies and it is to be replaced by psalms, hymns and spiritual songs - "a new song"!

Our music must now be true... honest... just... pure... lovely... of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.  Philippians 4:8,9

Our music is now for God, not for us!
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Ephesians 5:18,19

It is the word of Christ that is our blessing, etc., not the music itself, anymore. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  Colossians 3:16

Consider this final thought:

The Holy Spirit is God's power to guide and comfort, etc. the saved!
Today, we get the guidance from the Holy Spirit from the King James 1611 Bible - ONLY!
No feelings, thoughts, etc. unless guided by Scriptural truth!

The Devil has twisted God's music into his own power to guide and comfort, the 'lost'
and confuse and misdirect the 'saved'!!

So now musical Christian,
quit using David and Saul to justify yourself in turning to music
instead of your King James Bible!
