Secret Alms / Secret Prayer / Forgiveness
Short comments on audio from previous sermon on Dominionism and early
America.
-
What would a Christian say to do today, to fix America?
-
What damage did the Geneva Bible do to America?
-
It is a source of the destruction of America.
-
Should America go back to the law?
-
Go back to the garden?
-
Go back to the Gospels?
-
Go ahead to the Millennium?
-
Introduce America to Paul, and the Risen Save!
Public Alms vs Secret, etc.
1: Take heed
that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have
no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
-
alms - Any thing given gratuitously to relieve the poor, as money, food,
or clothing, otherwise called charity.
-
NIV - 'acts of righteousness'
-
just not the same - it is to be directed to the poor, etc.
-
how can one put his 'acts of righteousness' into a secret life?
-
Message Bible - Be especially careful when you are trying to be good
so that you don't make a performance out of it. It might be good theater,
but the God who made you won't be applauding.
-
take heed?
-
no reward!
-
no answer to their action toward them personally!
-
no 'sign!'
-
Do any of these things show us what is going on today on the street corners
/ churches / etc.
-
Do these fit?
-
'before men'
-
'to be seen of them'
2: Therefore when
thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
-
hypocrites
-
in the synagogues / streets
-
'do not sound a trumpet before thee'
-
'that they may have glory of men.'
-
again - 'they have their reward!'
-
having 'Mash" in their video rack and then preach
on the corners about watching videos!
-
preaching against modern bibles and screaming at
people with them, but preach alongside a modern bible pastor.
3: But when thou
doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4: That thine
alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall
reward thee openly.
-
Nobody was to know what you are doing - giving, etc.!
-
thy Father will reward them openly - blessings -
physical!
-
At first, Father is always a reference made to the
Father of the Jews, etc. not of the Gentiles!
-
then because of adoption, He becomes our spiritual
Father!
-
Romans 8:15 -
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have
received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
-
Along with Abraham as our father, too.
-
children of God
-
Galatians 3:26 - For
ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
When we 'grasp Paul' we tend to take some challenges
harder than usual.
-
salvation?
-
bible awareness
-
serious or not
-

prayer
Public vs Private Prayer
5: And when
thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to
pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that
they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
-
hypocrites
-
love to pray standing in the synagogues
-
love to pray in the corners of the streets
-
that they may be seen of men
-
they have their reward.
-
is this anything like the street workers today?
-
preaching the gospel of Jesus from the Gospels, and yet may of them seem
to fit this description, too.
6: But thou, when
thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door,
pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret
shall reward thee openly.
-
secret
-
reward thee openly
7: But when ye
pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that
they shall be heard for their much speaking.
-
as the heathen do - that is referring to the Gentiles, by the way - our
past and background, etc.
-
use vain repetitions
-
they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking
8: Be not ye therefore
like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before
ye ask him.
-
be not like them, but are there preachers / evangelists, etc. like them
today?
-
God knew then what things they needed...
-
So does He today, as well!
-
Romans 8:26
-
What do we seek after today?
-
See Matthew 6:31,32
-
We still do only now we expect God to provide them through our power of
prayer, personal walk, etc.
9: After this
manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name.
-
Ye, not We!
-
Ye - Jews, not to us at all!
10: Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
-
This is not what is next on our concern list!
-
This is Millennium
-
This is not our prayer!!!
11: Give us this
day our daily bread.
-
Matthew 4:4
-
Luke 4:4
-
John 6:41; 48; 50-51, 58.
12: And forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
-
The debt is for the working their way to heaven crowd.
-
See Romans 4:4 - Now
to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
13: And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
-
If they followed him, He would lead them from evil!
-
Matthew 26:41 - Watch
and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak.
-
Luke 8:13 -
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with
joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of
temptation fall away.
-
He did concerning us today!
-
Galatians 1:4 -
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present
evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
-
II Timothy 4:18 -
And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me
unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
-
I Corinthians 10:13 - There
hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful,
who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will
with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear
it.
-
Galatians 4:14 - And
my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but
received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
-
I Timothy 6:9 - But
they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many
foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Misc. Lord's Prayer versions:
learn from 'their' bibles what
they think...
New International Version
-
"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed
be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also
have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from the evil one. [a]'
-
where is verse 13b?
-
evil one?
The Message
-
"The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer - ignorant.
They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for
getting what you want from God. Don't fall for that nonsense. This is your
Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need.
-
With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
-
Our Father in heaven,
-
Reveal who you are.
-
Set the world right;
-
Do what's best— as above, so below.
-
Keep us alive with three square meals.
-
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
-
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
-
You're in charge!
-
You can do anything you want!
-
You're ablaze in beauty!
-
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Darby Translation
-
Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy
name be sanctified, let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven
so upon the earth; give us today our needed bread, and forgive us
our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation,
but save us from evil.
