GOD FORBID

General Outline of references viewed in the sermon

Today, after Paul teaches a few of his marvelous teachings about God, the response from the listeners is often very typical of what folks say today when we try to pass on what Paul has taught us.  Paul's answer was always a quick and short, "God forbid!"  Then he would go on and explain in even more detail what he wants them to learn.  We look at those questions, answers and explanations tonight.
The response to every question that we are dealing with here tonight is, "God Forbid!"
This chart shows the question along with the simple response, God forbid,
and then we see the answer & explanation from within the Scriptures themselves,
according to Paul, of course!

  • Romans 3:19 - Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

  • Note for today: Romans 2:16 - In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
Romans 3:31a - Do we then make void the law through faith? Romans 3:31b - God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
  • OT and Gospel law to the lost.
  • Paul's Epistles to the saved nails down the law for what it is and what it isn't.
Galatians 3:24 - Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
  • The law was schoolmaster, it is still theirs as they believe 'in God,' if even that.
  • Purpose of the law - to show the lost are lost
Romans 6:1 - What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

see 5:20,21 for why question was asked

Romans 6:3-14
Romans 6:15 - What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? Romans 6:15b,18 - God forbid. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:16-22
Romans 7:7a - What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Romans 7:7b - God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Romans 7:7b-12
  • The law is the schoolmaster to the lost - it is needed to die in order to be quickened.
  • Law makes sin alive, we die, then we are quickened!
Romans 7:13a - Was then that which is good made death unto me?  Romans 7:13b - God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Romans 9:15-26
Romans 11:1a - I say then, Hath God cast away his people? Romans 11:1b,2a - God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.

Romans 11:14 - If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
  • This has become the trick of the devil today - to get the 'poor and miserable lost' to want the 'riches' of the 'saved.'
  • Nothing about sin and how Christ truly takes care of sin, etc.
  • They have no idea HOW forgiveness works.
  • Preaching the false gospel has perverted and corrupted Christianity today - using the same desire - amazing, eh!
Galatians 2:17 - But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin?  Galatians 2:17b,18 - God forbid.  For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
  • Galatians 2:19-21 - For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

All the promises in the Book are NOT mine!

Galatians 3:21b - God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Galatians 3:22-29

The Final "God Forbid" is directed to us!

But God forbid that I should glory,
save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom the world is crucified unto me,
and I unto the world.
Galatians 6:14

Explanation:
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing,
nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
And as many as walk according to this rule,
peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.
Galatians 6:15,16

Then, oddly enough, there are no more references to 'God forbid' in the NT.
