Gave - past tense of giving.
This is my "post-Christmas" message.
We first read John 17
to see exactly and in detail how Jesus prayed as He finished the work His
Father had sent Him to do.
We see exactly what 'salvation' was during the gospel days.
-
vs 3 - And this
is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom thou hast sent.
-
vs 7 - Now they
have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
-
vs 8 - For I have
given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received
them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have
believed that thou didst send me.
-
vs 20 - Neither
pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on
me through their word;
Finished work
-
vs 4 -
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou
gavest me to do.
-
5:36 - But
I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father
hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me,
that the Father hath sent me.
-
Romans 8:1-4 - 1:
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,
who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the
Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and
death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh,
God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned
sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled
in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Be one
-
vs 11 - And now
I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee.
Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me,
that they may be one, as we are.
-
vs 21 -
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that
they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent
me.
-
Ephesians 2:13-18 -
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by
the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath
broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in
his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances;
for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that
he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain
the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar
off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by
one Spirit unto the Father.
Shall - future - us today!
-
vs 20 - Neither
pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through
their word;
There is a difference between believing 'in' and 'on.'
They had to believe "in" Jesus - that Jesus was the Son of God -
their Messiah

John 8:21-30
-
John 10:38
-
John 16:24-33
Once
-
Hebrews 9:12 - Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once
into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
-
vs 14 - How much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God?
-
24-28 - For Christ
is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures
of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God
for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest
entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then
must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now
once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this
the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and
unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin
unto salvation.
Today - through Paul's preaching
and teaching of the RISEN CHRIST
"We are to believe ON Christ"
John 3:16 is NOT TO us today.
For God so loved the world, that he gave
his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
-
To believe "in" is not what Christ told Paul to preach. To believe
on - to hear, believe and trust!
-
Just believing that Jesus was the Messiah - that He was the Son of God
is not enough today. Lots of people believe in Jesus but have never
put their trust in Him and His finished work.
-
Asking Jesus into their heart; committment, etc. is NOT salvation today!
-
Baby baptism is just simply NOT in the Bible for any example.
-
Adult baptism was John's baptism.
-
Being born again was to the nation of Israel, not for individual salvation.
Salvation according to Paul
-
See Romans 10:9-13
-
See Ephesians 1:12,13
Look at what Christ GAVE - and gave only ONCE!
-
Galatians 1:4 - Who
gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil
world, according to the will of God and our Father:
-
Galatians 2:20 -
am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth
in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of
the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
-
Ephesians 5:25 - Husbands,
love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself
for it;
-
I Timothy 2:6 - Who
gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
-
Titus 2:14 -
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
What can we GIVE first?
And
this they did, not as we hoped,
but first gave their own selves to the
Lord,
and unto us by the will of God.
II Corinthians 8:5
