Today, the Greatest
is Not 'Charity'
|
And now abideth faith, hope, charity,
these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
I Corinthians 13:13
Charity puts God's word 1st in all our actions with other people.
To the saved? or lost?
PS - there is no mention of charity in the Gospels!
Charity is a love that gives - a love that doesn't give is not true
love.
Church of Corinth is a carnal church.
With true love, you must also have true hate!
If you love your kids, you would hate that which would harm them, not
help them!
Christianity and the ways of the world changes charity to love!
Then they get into agape and phileo - Greek baloney!
Note: As we progress through this sermon, we must
not forget our 'goals,' objectives, etc. as a Christian:
-
Philippians 1:9-11 -
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge
and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that
ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled
with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory
and praise of God.
-
I Thessalonians 1:9,10 -
For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you,
and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even
Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
-
Acts 26:18,30 -
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the
power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and
inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me... that
they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
-
Titus 2:11-15 - For
the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching
us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed
hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus
Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity,
and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These
things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man
despise thee.
-
I Timothy 4:15,16 -
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting
may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue
in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that
hear thee.
-
I Timothy 2:1,2 -
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that
are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness
and honesty.
-
II Timothy 2:20-22 - But
in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but
also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If
a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour,
sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good
work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity,
peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Now, keeping those verses in mind for our personal
growth in our daily walk, etc. let's look at 'charity' - being 'charitable,'
etc.
Charity / Being Charitable to
Others
Read slowly and with understanding!
-
II Timothy 2:7 -
Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
Charity
-
Romans 14:1-23
-
I Corinthians 10:28-33 - But
if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not
for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is
the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: Conscience, I say, not thine own,
but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which
I give thanks? Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do,
do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor
to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in
all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they
may be saved.
-
I Corinthians 13:1-13
-
I Corinthians 16:13,14 - Watch
ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your
things be done with charity.
-
Note that our strength to do this is from grace.
-
II Timothy 2:1 - Thou
therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
-
Galatians 6:1 - Brethren,
if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such
an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be
tempted.
-
Ephesians 4:32 - And
be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as
God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
-
Colossians 3:13-14 - Forbearing
one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against
any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these
things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
-
I Thessalonians 3:6 - But
now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of
your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always,
desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
-
II Thessalonians 1:3 - We
are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because
that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you
all toward each other aboundeth;
-
I Timothy 1:5 - Now
the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good
conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have
turned aside unto vain jangling; (then
they blame you for not having charity towards them!)
-
II Timothy 2:22 - Flee
also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with
them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
-
Even young folks are to listen to this and have charity
in their lives towards others!
-
I Timothy 4:12 - Let
no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word,
in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Not these tribulation verses that are falsely yet
commonly used when people preach on charity today.
-
Yet, we some of this drawing closer and closer to
fruition!
-
James 4:11,12 - Speak
not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother,
and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law:
but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou
that judgest another?
-
How about speaking the truth today?
-
I Peter 3:8,9 - Finally,
be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren,
be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing:
but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye
should inherit a blessing.
-
I Peter 4:7,8 - But
the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto
prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for
charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
-
we have no 'sin' to cover - and overlooking the faults
and bad works of others comes to a point that you need to deal with it,
as Paul states. Grace AND truth!
-
I Peter 5:14 -
Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that
are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
-
Jude 1:12: These
are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding
themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of
winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked
up by the roots;
Now here
is the kicker - conclusion verse that will put charity in it's proper place
today!
Note: it is NOT in the 'Topical Bible' list of
verses on charity.
-
Why not?
-
It obviously has the word 'charity' as much as any
of the verses on charity!
-
It follows the entire chapter of charity!
-
Why? Because it shows the truth & place
of charity for TODAY!
-
I Corinthians 14:1-3 - Follow
after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto
God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation,
and comfort.
Preaching / Prophecy ranks over charity.
-
PROPHESY, v.i. To utter predictions; to make declaration of events
to come. Jer.11.
-
1. In Scripture, to preach; to instruct in religious doctrines; to
interpret or explain Scripture or religious subjects; to exhort. 1 Cor.13.
Ezek.37.
-
PROPHESYING, n. The act of foretelling or of preaching.
-
The word of the Lord is to be magnified above even his name!
-
Preaching takes precedence over 'charity' so then the word of God knocks
charity down a step or two today.
-
Charity is NOT to be the final authority of our actions!
Preaching / prophesy having the rightly divided KJB as the final authority!
-
I Corinthians 13:10 -
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall
be done away.
-
I Corinthians 4:5 - Therefore
judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring
to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels
of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
-
If these are not referring to the KJB (not the 'bible'
in general or in reference to the 'first' bible 90 A.D., etc.) then we
must put ourselves back into Paul's time or even further, back to the time
of the Gospels - or further ahead into the Tribulation meaning the Second
Coming is close!
-
Either Paul's books should not be in the Bible or
we are in the Tribulation now and should be concentrating on Hebrews to
Jude, again ignoring Paul!
KJB over Charity - Grace WITH truth!
-
We then see, from a KJB, that the time may arise
that carries us over the 'responsibility' of being charitable by our need
to:
-
avoid, withdraw from such, not strive, neither give
heed, purge from, reject, be not partakers, mark, note them, have no company
with, put away from yourselves, cast off, have no fellowship.
-
This is how Paul maintained his joy, peace, etc.
-
When he couldn't last any longer, he would avoid,
etc.
-
Romans 12:18: If
it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
-
II Corinthians 4:5-10 (read
through to 18,
if you want more...)
-
He lived with his being troubled.. but wasn't distressed!
-
He lived with his being perplexed... but wasn't in
despair!
-
He lived with his being persecuted... but knew he
wasn't forsaken!
-
He lived with being cast down... but didn't let it
destroy him!
-
He didn't compromise in order to show charity!
-
II Corinthians 1:7-11
- And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing,
that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the
consolation. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble
which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength,
insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we had the sentence of death
in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth
the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in
whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; Ye also helping together by
prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many
persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
-
He still preached what had to be preached!
-
Acts 28:31 -Preaching
the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus
Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
-
II Timothy 4:3-5 -Preach
the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort
with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when
they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they
heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away
their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou
in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full
proof of thy ministry.
-
Titus 2:11-15 - For
the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching
us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed
hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus

-
I Timothy 2:1,2 -
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that
are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness
and honesty.
-
If you want to maintain that quiet and peaceable
life in all godliness and honesty, you will have to avoid, withdraw from
such, not strive, neither give heed, purge from, reject, be not partakers,
mark, note them, have no company with, put away from yourselves, cast off,
have no fellowship -
-
IF you are willing to work on the 'godliness and
honesty' thing!
-
Preaching, teaching, etc. must go on!
-
It is far more than just soul winning and church
attendance today!
-
save them (???) and then starve them!
-
That is the pattern today!
-
Follow Paul's pattern in the churches today
-
I Corinthians 4:17 -
For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and
faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which
be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.
Remember those verses we
started with? They still pertain to us today - 'in spite of our need for
charity, etc.
-
Philippians 1:9-11 -
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge
and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that
ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being

The
entire King James Bible is written FOR us, but it is not all written TO
us!
We
learn from the "For" and we try to apply the 'TO!"
